Client: The Royal Marines charity

Project: Digital Illustration for Print

Helping the Royal Marines charity reach further through digital illustration

In 2024, we had the privilege of partnering with the Royal Marines Charity to create a unique illustration for their landmark fundraising dinner, celebrating the 360th birthday of the Royal Marines at London’s historic Guildhall.

From the very first conversation, the aim was to design an artwork that would capture the enduring spirit of the Corps across generations and inspire supporters to bid generously for a piece of living Royal Marines heritage.

A Concept Rooted in History and Modernity

To craft a concept with genuine impact, we explored imagery that would instantly resonate with both serving Commandos and veterans. A central idea soon emerged: to anchor the piece around the iconic figure from the Spean Bridge Memorial, a striking symbol of the Royal Marines’ World War II legacy and the daring raids that shaped their modern identity. We felt this figure embodied the courage and grit that runs through every era of the Corps’ history.

To connect past and present, we positioned the Spean Bridge Commando alongside a modern Royal Marine Commando, portrayed in full contemporary kit and posture. Behind the World War II figure, we sketched classic bombers to reflect the era’s air support and historical context. In contrast, we drew sleek modern drones soaring behind the present-day Commando, highlighting the evolution of warfare and the Corps’ continuous adaptation to new technology and threats.

Honouring 360 Years of Courage

Every detail, from the placement of insignia to the choice of supporting elements, was carefully developed through a series of sketches and reviews with key stakeholders from the Charity. Once approved, the final illustration was meticulously rendered using a blend of hand-drawing and digital painting, bringing depth, contrast and energy to the finished piece.

Printed and framed to gallery standard, the illustration was unveiled as a centrepiece at the Guildhall dinner and quickly became a focus for enthusiastic bidding. The positive response from guests and the Charity team confirmed that the artwork succeeded in honouring the Corps’ legacy while celebrating its ongoing role in a changing world.

For us, it was a deeply meaningful project, a chance to contribute creatively to a historic milestone and help the Royal Marines Charity raise vital funds for those who serve and their families.
